AX Code vs Claude Code

Both tools support terminal-based coding. Consider AX Code when choosing between supported local runtimes and cloud providers is central to your workflow. Consider Claude Code when you want Anthropic’s coding workflow and supported deployment options.

Which workflow fits?

The decision is about model setup and how you inspect work, rather than terminal access alone. Claude Code also offers IDE, desktop and web surfaces; AX Code’s website focuses on its terminal runtime.

Include WebMCP in your comparison

With the experimental WebMCP bridge, AX Code can read pages, call tools a website exposes and interact with its interface. It starts disabled and opens an isolated Chrome window when you enable it.

Check whether each coding agent can discover and call page-registered WebMCP tools, how it handles browser profiles and approvals, and which setup it requires. Evaluate the same website and task. MCP server connections and general browser automation alone do not establish WebMCP support; check each product’s current documentation.

What to evaluate with AX Code

Open AX Code in your repository and use /connect to choose a supported local runtime, cloud API, coding CLI or private GPU endpoint. Choose your sandbox and permission settings before granting access to unfamiliar code. Ordinary sessions do not automatically enforce your project’s test suite. Run the repository’s checks and inspect the diff. Use the session graph to see recorded steps and tool calls. A recorded check failure remains a failure; the agent’s completion message is not proof that a patch is correct.

AX Code Business is planned. The website’s illustrative speed display is not a benchmark against Claude Code.

Is a terminal agent automatically a local model?

No. Running an agent in your terminal does not tell you where inference happens. AX Code can connect to a supported local runtime; cloud models and external tools can still send data off-device. Check the complete configuration of either tool.

Try a representative task

Start with the model and credentials you intend to use. Give each agent the same task, permission boundaries and tests. Review correctness and traceability before comparing elapsed time or cost.
